A new Sufjan Stevens album is always a matter of excitement, but given this first lead single, The Ascension is going to be something extra-special. Released by Asthmatic Kitty on September 25th.

New Album Watch :: Thurston Moore - By the Fire

Thurston Moore will be 62 years old this year. Your dad is probably younger than that. But your dad probably isn't putting out an album called By the Fire this September with help on drums from his former bandmate Steve Shelley, and with bass and backing vocal by My Bloody Valentine's Debbie Googe. And the lead single from your dad's new album probably isn't called "HASHISH." So there are some differences.

Movies Movies... Movies!!

Anyone who's shopped and/or talked with us here at Backstreet knows we love movies. And they also know that our floor space is tremendously limited. So even though we have a small but mighty selection of used DVDs and Blu-rays we don't tend to invest in non-music oriented video. That said we've been approached by a movie and TV media distributor in Canada that wants to be our wholesaler for small batch orders. Below is a small sample of the types of titles they offer (Criterion, Arrow, Kino Lorber, plus some of the majors). We would be happy to do occasional orders to fill people's wantlists and go from there. Message us at backstreetrecords@gmail or on FB or IG and we will talk celluloid.

In Case You MIssed It: Teebs

Teebs - Anicca (Brainfeeder)

Mtendere Mandowa is a Los Angeles based producer that creates genre-crossing music ranging from lovely ambient jazz drifts to head-bopping trippy hip-hop. Anicca is his fourth album and it features collaboration with Thomas Stankiewicz, Panda Bear, Sudan Archives and a few others. It's a fun and colourful blur of an album.

In Case You MIssed It: Common Holly

Common Holly - When I Say to You Black Lightning (Royal Mountain)

Montreal artist Brigitte Naggar wasn't on my radar on the end of the year when her sophomore album showed up on a few interesting best of lists. Sure enough it is a blend of intriguing folk and indie rock with a dark edge that suits the cover art. Think a kind of North country Cat Power or a less art rock version of Mega Bog and you'll have part of the picture.

In Case You MIssed It: The Good Ones

The Good Ones - RWANDA, you should be loved

A trio of Rwanda farmers, survivors of genocide, playing traditional songs on acoustic guitar and percussion, with a few guest appearances here, including TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, Wilco's Nels Cline, Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker, and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields. It's a soul-stirring affair, and more.
